LAMIS / ‘ lah·mees /
noun 1. a female name of Arabic origin that means ‘soft to the touch’ or ‘soft to the hand’
LAMIS is a textile atelier specializing in handmade wool and silk floor art and tapestries
LAMIS creates one-of-a-kind products by fusing modern design with traditional rug making techniques. Each piece begins with a custom selected color palette and high-quality raw materials, like sheep’s wool or bamboo silk. The materials are then hand-dyed, hand-spun, hand-woven, hand-knotted or hand-tufted by our artisan manufacturers in Egypt.
Our collections notably place color center stage. By leveraging a maximalist aesthetic, LAMIS explores intuitive interpretations of subconscious, organized chaos, and fluid geometric forms. All with an innate sense of play. This allows every rug to be as fun as it is timeless — evoking the joy, wonder, and freedom of our inner child.
We’re proud to partner with KAHHAL1871, the luxury home of contemporary and heritage hand-knotted rugs in Egypt for over five generations. In addition to hand-knotting, KAHHAL1871’s artisans also specialize in loom-weaving — an ancient Egyptian tradition that’s been in practice since the time of the pharaohs. The historic significance of these processes, juxtaposed with LAMIS’s modern design sensibilities, elevates our collection into a refreshingly vibrant cultural ode.

LAMIS was founded by Lamis Kanaan, Jordan born artist currently residing in San Francisco. After graduating from Ringling College of Art + Design in 2014, Lamis started working as a licensed Interior Designer. Throughout her professional career, she has led design and creative direction on large commercial projects, including hotels, restaurants, multi-family condos, medspas, and more. Lamis began rug-making in 2022 as a creative outlet, and it soon catalyzed the connection between her Eastern heritage and her Western influences.
Named after her Bosnian grandmother, Lamis’s attraction to the art of textile making is as serendipitous as it is meaningful. Her name — meaning “soft to the touch” — holds rich heritage from its Arabic origins and beautifully relates to her passion for textiles.
This focus on soft fabrics and vibrant colors in her touchable artwork empowers Lamis to bridge both sides of self.
